Gadolinium, used as a MRI contrast dye has been linked to NSF, a catastrophic disease with debilitating effects on the body.

Gadolinium MRI Contrast Agents Manufacturers:

Magnevist® (Gadopentetate Dimeglumine)
Approved by FDA on 6/2/1988
Manufacturer: Bayer HealthCare
Manufacturer: Schering AG
Manufacturer: Berlex

The effects can be so devastating in fact that it is common for victims to find themselves immobilized and unable to move around or work within weeks of the onset of symptoms. As a result, many struggle to have enough money to pay for bills, medical treatment and basic living expenses.

MRI Contrast Agent / Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) / Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD) Timeline

1988: FDA approves Gadopentetate Dimeglumine (Magnevist); currently 50% market share

1992: FDA approves Gadateridol (ProHance); currently 10% market share

1993: FDA approves Gadodiamide (Omniscan); currently 35% market share

1997: First case of NSF identified (initially diagnosed as NFD or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy)

1999: FDA approves Gadoversetamide (OptiMARK); currently 5% market share

2000: First report of 15 patients diagnosed with NSF

2004: FDA approves Gadobenate Dimeglumine (MultiHance)

2006: Gadolinium-based MRI contrast agent proposed as the "trigger" for NSF in patients with renal failure

2007: FDA calls for "boxed warning" for Gadolinium-based contrast agents

2008: First lawsuit alleging "the chemical make-up of Omniscan makes it more likely that Gadolinium will become free within the bodies of recipients, thereby making it more likely that kidney patients will develop NSF"

FDA = US Food and Drug Administration

So far, many of the Gadolinium MRI contrast settlements have been quite large, as they should be, however, because of the speed at which Gadolinium side effects tend to present themselves, until the money actually arrives, most plaintiffs are able to benefit greatly from a pre settlement loan or lawsuit loan*. It can give plaintiffs the money they need to do the things they want to do now, before it's too late, and otherwise get their finances in order.

Settlement funding or a lawsuit cash advance can give plaintiffs the money they need now to get by until their full settlement comes through. It also allows them to enjoy a better qualify of life while they're still mobile enough to take advantage of it.

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis is a rare, serious, progressive disorder that involves fibrosis or hardening or tightening of the skin, joints, eyes and internal organs.

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis

As more information becomes available, we're discovering that NSF attacks different people in different ways. One thing that is consistent however, is that the cause of NSF seems to be associated exclusively with exposure to Gadolinium in patients with severe kidney failure.

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF), formerly known as Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD), (dermopathy means disorder of skin) is a condition that, to date, has occurred only in people with severe kidney disease who have undergone one or more MRI's.

NSF is a bizarre systemic disorder with its most prominent and visible effects in the skin. As hundreds of additional emerging cases are studied, it is becoming clear that kidney disease seems to be a prerequisite for developing NSF because all currently known cases of NSF involve patients suffering from severe kidney dysfunction. Nephrogenic means starting with the kidney, so NSF (as opposed to NFD) is accepted as the terminology most accurately reflecting the disease.

What Is Gadolinium?

Gadolinium

Gadolinium is a soft, malleable, silvery white rare earth metal that is never found in nature as the free element, but is contained in many rare minerals such as monazite and bastnäsite. It's periodic chart of elements symbol is Gd.

Gadolinium is an element that is used in contrast dyes for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). It helps doctors to better distinguish between blood vessels and nearby tissue.

Nephrogenic

The first toxic side effects of Gadolinium were discovered in 1997. Since that time, tens of thousands of cases have been diagnosed worldwide.

On May 23, 2007 the FDA issued a public health advisory and cited recent findings that clearly indicated Gadolinium-based MRI contrasting agents significantly increased the risk of developing Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD).

There are five different Gadolinium MRI contrasting agents approved for use in the United States. They are Omniscan® (Gadodiamide) manufactured by GE Healthcare, OptiMARK® (Gadoversetamide) manufactured by Mallinckrodt and Tyco Healthcare, Magnevist® (Gadopentetate Dimeglumine) made by Bayer HealthCare, Berlex and Schering AG; ProHance® (Gadoteridol) and MultiHance® (Gadobenate Dimeglumine) both made by Bracco Diagnostics.

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis Symptoms

People with NSF develop fibrosis of the skin and this may spread to the connective tissues and other organs of body. Some of the most common side effects include:

  • Woody skin with texture of an orange peel
  • Swelling and tightening of the skin
  • Muscle weakness
  • Difficulty flexing and extending the joints
  • Loss of mobility
  • Locking joints
  • Pain in the hip or rib areas
  • Eye discoloration (yellow spots on the eyes)
  • Fibrosis of the skin and internal organs
  • Skin thickening and waxing
  • Red or dark skin patches and skin rashes
  • Blister-like lesions
  • Burning and itching skin

Technology Gone Horribly Wrong

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis

Recently, a number of Gadolinium lawsuits have been launched in response to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcement that Gadolinium-containing MRI contrast agents have been identified ad the cause of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy in patients with kidney disease.

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis and Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy is a relatively new medical syndrome and as more cases are discovered, researchers are beginning to understand more about it and are slowly getting a clearer medical picture of the disease.

What is known is that NSF is a progressive, currently incurable and irreversible disorder which causes the development of excessive scar tissue and thick, tight, hardened areas of skin which often cover the joints, resulting in severe limitations on movement. It frequently renders the victim unable to walk or fully move the joints of their arms, hands, legs and/or feet and many become dependent on a wheelchair within weeks of the onset.

There is currently no known cure or effective treatment for Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy and the disease can be excruciatingly painful, debilitating and has, in a number of cases so far, lead to death.

In pre settlement funding terminology, NSF is what we refer to as a "signature disease" with regard to liability . This is because NSF does not occur naturally so it cannot be marginalized, explained away or blamed on any other cause like most other medical conditions can be. The ONLY known cause of NSF to date is by exposure to Gadolinium-based MRI contrast dye.

This points the "smoking gun" of liability directly at the companies who make the MRI dye and may explain why settlements have typically been very large and have been handled relatively quickly & quietly to avoid attracting unwanted attention.
